{"id":10,"date":"2015-09-25T23:24:25","date_gmt":"2015-09-26T06:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunescholar.wordpress.com\/?p=8"},"modified":"2020-06-10T20:14:24","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T03:14:24","slug":"digital-humanities-new-scholars-seminar-day-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennedyhq.com\/wp\/2015\/09\/25\/digital-humanities-new-scholars-seminar-day-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Humanities New Scholars Seminar &#8211; Day 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attending the New Scholars Seminar put on by CHCI (<a href=\"http:\/\/chcinetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes<\/a>) as an \u201cunconference\u201d on June 29-30, 2015, before the Global Digital Humanities Conference in Sydney, Australia, in July was a great experience for me as someone who had learned about DH only a few months prior. As fate would have it, I had already booked a flight to Australia for a conference in Brisbane and had decided to fly to Sydney first to check out the city. So I was already planning on being in Sydney then \u2013 just in time to switch to spending a week at conferences instead of sightseeing! (I did pack in some activities on the following weekend.)<\/p>\n<p>On the first day of the New Scholars Seminar, we\u00a0brainstormed ideas for sessions on topics we wanted to discuss, and I learned a lot and took many notes on Learning DH, Teaching DH, Ethics, and Straddling Disciplines. Drs. <a href=\"http:\/\/ualberta.academia.edu\/GeoffreyRockwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geoffrey Rockwell <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/uws.academia.edu\/RachelHendery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rachel Hendery<\/a> were very supportive leaders and facilitators and also enriched the sessions they sat in on.<\/p>\n<p>Some issues we discussed:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning DH <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to translate lab-based learning into the humanities.<\/li>\n<li>Problematic when what I want to teach is already 10 years out of date (could having an uncourse where students have more determination of content possibly address this?).<\/li>\n<li>How to do a lit review of a new area:\n<ul>\n<li>Canonical projects overview.<\/li>\n<li>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalhumanities.org\/answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DH Answers<\/a>\u00a0to see if it has already been dealt with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coursera<\/a> courses.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/software-carpentry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Software Carpentry<\/a> workshops.<\/li>\n<li>Trial and error messing with code.<\/li>\n<li>Follow links in an academic paper to the data and tool to replicate it.<\/li>\n<li>Pose problem to students and have them present a workshop on it (independent study).<\/li>\n<li>Look outside the university:\n<ul>\n<li>Outside consultants like to be legitimized by being asking to come to university.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When is DH a method vs. a perspective?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Teaching DH<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Often needs to involve a lab component.<\/li>\n<li>Lends itself to team-teaching.<\/li>\n<li>Sees technology as objects for study, as texts.<\/li>\n<li>Questions:\n<ul>\n<li>What texts to assign?<\/li>\n<li>How to assess?\n<ul>\n<li>Perhaps a proposal for a project.<\/li>\n<li>Digital portfolio as employable skill presentation.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of essays, have blogs and other online writing.<\/li>\n<li>Use sandbox where things aren\u2019t public and then get permission to make it live.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of something to be posted online (Goodreads, Amazon book review).<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to Wikipedia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>What are core skills students should learn?\n<ul>\n<li>Knowing what networks and the Internet are and how computers talk to each other.<\/li>\n<li>Typing at least 45wpm.<\/li>\n<li>Using word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation software.<\/li>\n<li>Critical thinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Offer a research methods class.<\/li>\n<li>Have practitioners guest-lecture on their specialty.<\/li>\n<li>How to make it appealing to other majors (like Computer Science)\n<ul>\n<li>Helps them learn humanities skills, like the ability to hold competing ideas and multiple viewpoints at the same time, rather than thinking in black and white.<\/li>\n<li>Visualizations show that the same data can be displayed in different ways.<\/li>\n<li>Can help them get managerial positions and think outside the box.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ethics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If using public data for research is okay, what happens if it is later made private? (Example: Facebook post).<\/li>\n<li>Most data is held by corporations with Terms of Use and without ethics.\n<ul>\n<li>Non-disclosure agreements.<\/li>\n<li>Difference between state vs. private organizations owning and using data.<\/li>\n<li>Obscurity of data centers and locations.<\/li>\n<li>Laws differ between institutions\/countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Anonymous vs. identifiable users or data (usernames, handles).<\/li>\n<li>Questions of scholarly practice:\n<ul>\n<li>Is it okay to cite bloggers?<\/li>\n<li>Using pirated software.<\/li>\n<li>Exploiting online users to make money\/gain from their data to publish research.<\/li>\n<li>Doing research on Dark Web or illegal content.<\/li>\n<li>How to archive your data, encryption or non-encryption:\n<ul>\n<li>Will researchers 15 years from now misinterpret the data if there is no context or readme file attached?<\/li>\n<li>EU rules around Open Access and data sets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How far behind are Ethics Approval Committees?\n<ul>\n<li>Standard format of survey questions doesn\u2019t deal with asking questions online; for example, on a blog for people to respond. Could you post a disclaimer on the blog and have that count as consent?<\/li>\n<li>GamerGate people have no qualms about posting addresses and phone numbers online, yet researchers have to go through all kinds of hurdles.<\/li>\n<li>Onus is on the researchers because laws can\u2019t keep up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Interesting reading: <a href=\"http:\/\/oktrends.okcupid.com\/\">http:\/\/oktrends.okcupid.com\/<\/a> and data from dating sites being leaked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Straddling Disciplines<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pose DH as complementary instead of threat.<\/li>\n<li>Use opportunities to liaison with Computer Science students.<\/li>\n<li>Issues with collaboration:\n<ul>\n<li>Image persists of the lone, heroic scholar whose monograph is linked to tenure, promotion, etc.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ve hitched your success to others.<\/li>\n<li>Open Access and publishing.<\/li>\n<li>Two streams: traditional academic and digital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Staying Current in DH<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Google search for news on your topic<\/li>\n<li>Subscribe to <a href=\"http:\/\/thehumanist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Humanist<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Twitter<\/li>\n<li>Conference paper topics and
